Harsh environments can create issues that push every part of a fiber network to its limits. Temperature swings, vibration, moisture, dust, and pressure changes can affect how light behaves inside the fiber. One thing to drift in these conditions is polarization. A polarization insensitive optical circulator is a device used in fiber optic systems. Its job is to move light from one point to another in only one direction across multiple ports. What makes it “polarization insensitive” is that it doesn’t care about the direction in which the light waves are vibrating (which is called polarization).
