Fiber laser systems are used in areas such as medical industries, optical sensing, military defense, and advanced industrial processing due to high beam quality, lower cost, and higher conversion efficiency. In a high-power fiber laser system, heat handling is a significant problem due to increased output power. It is why a cladding power stripper with higher cooling ability is used to deal with unwanted optical power and light.

High Power Fiber Laser Systems

Reasons why fiber laser systems need cladding power stripper

Due to laser diode pump technology and double cladding fiber technology, output power has been increased rapidly in fiber laser systems. At the same time, optical power and unwanted light also increase. These factors make thermal management a problem in fiber laser systems as compared to other laser systems. It is very critical to remove the unwanted heat in order to protect the optical fiber and other components in a fiber laser system. This is why cladding power strippers have been developed for stripping the unwanted power and light of the system with their cooling ability. It is the most vital component of the double cladding fiber laser system (DCFLS) to remove unwanted light and heat converted by it. A quartz block is used at the end of the fiber to avoid any thermal damage.

Design and functionality of cladding power stripper

To design the CPS (classing power stripper) structure, fiber component manufacturers use microchannel cooling technology for better flow and uniformity. The CPS structure mainly has four parts:

  • Heat sink made of aluminum alloy
  • Cladding tube
  • Block interface
  • Pipe interface

There is a double cladding fiber surrounded by a tube in the center of the CPS structure. The unwanted light is dispersed on the aluminum heat sink and converted to heat when contacting the inner surface of the heat sink. The heat generated in the heat sink is absorbed by the fuscous coat with the flow of a cooling liquid.

Features of CPC structure

  • Low Insertion Loss
  • High Power Handling
  • High Power Absorption
  • PM and Non-PM are available
  • Fiber can be customized
  • High Reliability
  • Excellent Temperature Stability

Cladding Power Strippers are used for a variety of applications across industries. They are used in fiber amplifiers, laser systems, high-power beam delivery, ASE stripping, Image sensing, quantum optics, advanced industrial process, metrology, telecommunication, and biomedical sectors.

At DK Photonics, we provide cladding power strippers with all kinds of double-clad fiber with cladding power up to 500W. You can also design a custom CPS as per your desired specifications such as custom fiber type, handling power, and different wavelengths to meet your application requirements.
